Andhra Pradesh
Pratham initiated activities in Andhra Pradesh in March 2005 by conducting a pilot project of the L2R program in 10 schools of Hyderabad. By July, Pratham got permission to run this program in the government schools in 8 other districts, covering about 68,000 children. Today, Pratham is working in 14 districts with the help of approximately 15,000 volunteers.
The programs being conducted in Andhra Pradesh include:
- Direct programs: Balwadis, learning support classes and libraries are running in the cities of Hyderabad, Vishakhapatnam and Vizag reaching almost 7000 children every month.
- Read India: is running in 14 districts covering 518 villages. Approximately 150,000 children are being covered under the program. Though a formal partnership was not forged, the State government provided strong support to the Read India campaign. Letters were sent by the government to the district officials to garner support at the district level.
- In-School Program: In Hyderabad, Pratham also runs an In-School program to support the activities being conducted in the state. The program aims to improve the learning levels of children at different stages of schooling and reduce Government school dropouts within elementary education structures. Under the program a volunteer is placed in each community. This volunteer helps the children with academics out-side the school and interacts with the families to encourage children to attend school regularly, escorts them to school, prepares a list of absentees and follows them up. As part of this program, Pratham AP also started the Mother’s Contact Initiative in Hyderabad. The program aims at sensitising the mothers and involving them in their child’s learning.
- ECCE Centre: An ECCE center has been set up in Hyderabad which regularly conducts trainings of Balwadi teachers to become efficient early childhood education and care administrators.
- English program: The English program was piloted in 2007 in Hyderabad and is now in the process of being scaled up.
- HI project: Regular classes are conducted in both Urdu and Telegu communities.
