DISTRICTS AND CITIES OF PRATHAM ACTIVITY

Assam
Pratham began operations in Assam by setting up the library program in 8 districts. Today, we are working in a big way to improve the reading, writing and arithmetic levels of children through the Read India campaign across the state

Read India was implemented in 22 districts in the state, using a community based model. In 2007 and 2008, Pratham Assam worked with the state government in a 2 month long Read Enhancement Programme called Porhim – Hikim. In 2008, the programme covered 3849 schools in 83 blocks of 23 districts. The schools included Assamese, Bengali, and Bodo medium schools.

The other programmes that are being implemented in Assam include:

PORHIM-HIKIM Programme with collaboration of UNICEF: Since 2007, Pratham in collaboration with UNICEF has been conducting a reading enhancement progranmme for the children of the tea garden communities. The programme helps improve their reading skills in the school language and facilitate their qualitative engagement in the teaching and learning process. The program is implemented in the primary schools under the Tea Garden Management.

Reading enhancement programme with the help of mothers group: In January 2009, Pratham launched a reading enhancement programme involving the mothers of the children. The main objective of this programme was too make the mothers aware regarding the status of their child's education and motivate them to help their children in school. In 10 full districts 100 schools from each block and in 13 single block districts 50 schools were covered.
