Himachal Pradesh
In 2006, Pratham launched a joint pilot program with the State government at the cluster level. This initiative started in all the 2104 clusters schools of the state. Through the pilot, Pratham trained government primary schools teachers in Maths and English accelerated learning techniques. The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Himachal saw the positive impact on children’s way of learning in the pilot and paved the way for a scaled up program in the entire state. In 2007, the program was scaled upto cover all the 10,613 schools of Himachal Pradesh.
The programs ongoing in Himachal are:
- Aadhar: As part of the national-level Read India campaign, Pratham offered its support to Himachal Pradesh government, to collectively create the framework to achieve the following objectives:
- To help Himachal Pradesh achieve higher quality in elementary education.
- To help build quality improvement processes in elementary education.
SSA HP and Pratham have worked closely in executing the program. Under the program, one school hour each was dedicated for reading and arithmetic. Pratham mobilized over 9000 volunteers who worked along with school teachers to enhance learning levels of children in the state. In Himachal, Pratham has trained 18,000 teachers and is reaching approximately 400,000 children.
In 2009-10, Pratham has signed an MoU with the state SSA to implement Aadhar Plus which will cover schools upto Upper Primary Level. Pratham's English module will be implemented in all 10,673 government primary schools and 4200 upper primary schools of the state.
- Pratham Learning Centres --- Community Based Campaign Pratham is also running Learning Centres in the state where volunteers from each of the 118 education blocks are trained in L2R module with Hindi Math and English as its components. These volunteers in turn teach students in the communities. To encourage them to earn a livelihood, the volunteers are allowed to charge a nominal fee for the classes.
