Former president of India, Kocheril Raman Narayanan, is the
Patron of Pratham.
Being a strong advocate of literacy
and education, he spoke of how India has achieved much by
way of education on his last pre-Republic Day speech as President,
on January 25, 2002. However, he did concede that India still
has the largest number of illiterates in any country in the
world and welcomed the Bill before Parliament for the provision
of education for all children between the ages of 6 to 14
as a great step forward.
He also spoke of the need to extend the facility of free and
compulsory education to the entire age group up to 18 years
so that illiteracy is banished from the land.
Being a strong advocate of universalization of education,
Mr Narayanan fervently shares Pratham's dream.
