Ajay Piramal takes over as
Chairman of PIEI
At the Pratham India Education Initiative (PIEI) Board Meeting
held on 19th July, 2007, Mr. Ajay Piramal was
unanimously nominated to take over as the Chairman of the Board
from Mr. N. Vaghul, Chairman, ICICI Bank, who was instrumental,
as the founding Chairman of PIEI, in bringing leaders of
Corporate India like Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Mangalam Birla,
Lakshmi N. Mittal, Gautam Thapar, Rajat Gupta, Keshub Mahindra,
on to the Board. Mr. Vaghul hands over on completion of 5 years
as Chairman but will continue to be a member of the Board. Mr.
Piramal, Chairman of Nicholas Enterprises Ltd., is a founding
Director of Pratham India and a long time supporter.

The Board and the
executive team expressed its gratitude to Mr. Vaghul for his
contribution to the Pratham movement and recalled how his
guidance and enlightened support helped transform a local
initiative in Mumbai in the nineties to a vibrant national
movement today. |

Commenting
on the occasion, Mr. Vaghul said that Pratham had grown both in impact and size
and had made a solid difference to the education of children coming from
underprivileged backgrounds. Its vision of “Every child in school and learning
well” now seemed real and not too distant. He was sure that his successor, Ajay
Piramal, with his experience, networks and energy, would accelerate the pace of
the movement and help in educating all children in the country. |
