Pratham began its operations in Gujarat in 1999, mainly in Baroda and Ahmedabad. Since 2003 the activities in Gujarat are both a mix of urban and rural programmes.

 

Today, Pratham in Gujarat works in three urban cities working with children in urban slum communities and 10 blocks of 9 districts. The programmes range from covering pre-school education, elementary education, Upper Primary Education and Secondary education. For Secondary Education, Pratham in Gujarat is one of the states that runs the Second Chance Program - which offers, drop out girls and boys a chance to complete their secondary education.

Read India as an Urban Programme is active in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat – offering pre school support, care givers program for 0-3 years, pre school camps, supplementary learning support for children of 6-14 years. This program is being mainly carried out by Pratham team members who have been working with Pratham for the last 14 years.
 
   
Upper Primary – Learning Support or catch up programme – offering modules to brush for secondary education, in Language, Math, Life Skills and English. This project is carried out in Ahmedabad, Gondal, Kadi and Dholka in Gujarat.
   
The Second Chance programme is being carried out at four blocks, Kadi and Mehsana of Mehsana District, Dholka of Ahmedabad district and Gondal of Rajkot district. The programme reaches more than 400 aspiring students who wish to complete their secondary education.
   
Pratham Council for Vulnerable Children implements its direct programmes such as awareness sessions, academic support and rescue operations in Valsad and Surat along with a toll-free helpline for children.
   
 
   
In Navsari, Pratham has established the PACE Centre and run Hospitality courses for to avail training and be absorbed at entry level positions in the hospitality industry.

Ahmedabad has a Vocational Programme with special focus on Beauty Care Skills.
Special Programmes

Local collaboration and partnerships Several institutions like Sardar Patel University and Gujarat Law Society, Institutions and colleges from Mehasana and Kutch and other NGOs have been ardent supporters in Pratham programs including ASER.

 

   

Government Tie Ups

In the current year Pratham has a collaboration with active interest of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan Government of Gujarat Gandhinagar and J-PAL ( the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab South Asia) for improving learning levels using the evidence based approach of Teaching At The Right Level .

 

The programme is being implemented in Gujarat since November 2015 in two district (Sabarkantha and Gandhinagar) and has covered 14,000 children from 300 schools.

Pratham has also been carrying out Learning Camps in Government schools through government notifications for improving learning levels in 10 blocks across 9 districts.

 

In 2011, Pratham was called upon by the government of Gujarat, to study the process of Gunotsav.

 

The state government programme 'Gunotsav', in collaboration with Pratham, aims to evaluate the quality of primary school education across Gujarat. Government officials actively participate in this annual review.

 

Pratham collaborated with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan from 2010 to 2012. In 2011, a programme called 'Pragna' was implemented for children in Std. 1-5. Pragna is an activity based learning programme that aims to make teaching and learning fun for both teachers and children. The programme was run in 258 schools in 2011 and now spread to 2,500 schools in Gujarat.
