About Pratham and ASER Centre
Pratham was founded in 1995, to provide pre-school education to children in Mumbai slums. Over the last 29 years, Pratham has grown to be India’s largest NGO working to provide quality education to underprivileged youth and children in over 23 states and union territories across the country, with a range of interventions.
Established in 2008, ASER Centre is Pratham’s autonomous research and assessment unit. ASER conducts the largest citizen-led annual household survey of children in India. ASER Centre promotes a culture of evidence-based decision-making and seeks to develop and use simple yet rigorous methods to generate evidence on the scale on the outcomes of social sector programs, especially education. It also aims to strengthen the link between evidence and action by building the capacity of individuals and institutions to design, conduct, understand, and communicate the results of assessments that focus on key outcome indicators.
Assessment Unit
The assessment Unit at ASER Centre designs assessment tools for National and International Programmes across subjects /domains for Early Childhood Education (ECE), Primary and Upper-primary age groups, and EdTech programmes.
Additionally, assessment tools to measure teachers’ effectiveness have also been created and are evolving continuously. In recent times, the Unit has also started developing tools to measure the impact of technology-led learning interventions and adaptive assessment tool design on Android applications.
Roles and Responsibilities:
As an intern in the Assessment Unit of ASER Centre, you will focus on analysing in-house Science content and textbooks for the Upper Primary Grades 6 – 8. Your responsibilities will include:
Content Analysis:
- Review and analyse the in-house developed Science content and the NCERT Science textbooks for the Upper primary grades.
- Evaluate the content for alignment with learning objectives and educational standards.
Data Compilation:
- Organize and compile data from your analysis, identifying key trends and insights.
- Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing your findings.
Presentation of Findings:
- Create presentations to share your analysis with the Assessment Unit team.
- Participate in discussions to refine findings and suggestions for improvement.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with team members to understand the assessment development process.
- Support in developing standardized tools to assess the children’s knowledge and skills for science programs.
- Facilitate in pilot testing of the tools within Delhi to enhance the quality of the assessment instrument.
- Engage in regular feedback sessions to enhance your learning experience.
Deliverables:
- A detailed report on the Textbook analysis, highlighting quantitative and qualitative analysis of the chapters and exercises.
- Assisting in item development and piloting following the standard practices of the Unit.
- An overall presentation summarizing your findings and outputs to be shared with the team at the end of the internship.
Support Provided:
- Mentorship from experienced professionals in the Assessment Unit.
- Opportunities to learn about the assessment development process and stages.
- Access to resources and materials related to educational assessment and policy.
Compensation: This internship is unpaid. However, successful interns may have future opportunities to join Pratham or the Assessment Unit. Expenses on field travel during the internship period will be reimbursed on actuals by the ASER Centre.
