Rahul: West Bengal Boy Returns to School with Pratham’s Efforts

The children’s club helps the 12-year-old overcome his fear of studies and improve his reading and math skills

Rahul Mal, a 12-year-old boy from West Bengal’s Bankura district, faced significant challenges. His parents worked as migrant labourers, often leaving him responsible for caring for his two-year-old sister. This made it difficult for Rahul to continue his education and in February 2023, he dropped out of school after completing Grade 5.

Pratham has been running its “Hamara Gaon” initiative in Rahul’s village. When a Pratham representative learned about Rahul’s situation, he engaged a teacher of a local primary school to discuss the importance of regular attendance at school with Rahul’s parents. Following the discussion, Rahul’s parents re-enrolled him in school in Grade 6 and he resumed his studies in January 2024.

Rahul also rejoined Pratham-run children’s club for Grades 6 to 8. The club provided him a space where he could comfortably express his thoughts, work on his math skills and improve his general knowledge. This supportive environment helped him overcome his fear of studies and he enjoyed reading with his friends. With help from Pratham's community members, his school teacher and senior students, Rahul’s reading and math skills improved.

Rahul’s academic progress brought joy to his family, who expressed gratitude for Pratham’s support. Rahul now understands the importance of education and dreams of becoming a teacher to help other children.
